Would you rather be virtually guaranteed a U.S Senate seat or have a decent shot at becoming president? That’s the question currently facing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ahead of 2028, new polling data shared exclusively with Heard Around Town suggests.
A Honan Strategy Group survey of 446 Democratic voters in NYC found that 47% would back AOC in a hypothetical 2028 primary, while just 29% would back Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for reelection and 23% remain undecided. “A sitting U.S. Senator trailing a generational alternative by 18 points this early, before the race has even taken shape, says a lot about where the energy in the city’s Democratic base currently sits,” pollster Bradley Honan said.
What if AOC decides to run for president instead? Honan’s survey of Democratic NYC voters shows that she’s among the leading candidates but could have trouble breaking away from the pack: former VP Kamala Harris currently leads the 2028 presidential field with 21% of the vote, while AOC, Pete Buttigieg and Gavin Newsom are all tied for a distant second place with 11% of the vote.
That suggests there’s not much of a home field advantage for AOC – those numbers roughly match her national polling average, two years out.
